Chlorine and Lash Extensions in Batumi: Dos and Don’ts

October 15, 2026 · 12 min

Swimming is one of the best parts of a Batumi summer. Between the Black Sea, hotel pools, beach clubs and apartment complexes with pools, many of my clients ask the same question: can I swim with lash extensions? Yes, you can - but chlorine and frequent water exposure can make good aftercare more important.

I always want you to enjoy your holiday, weekend by the sea, or everyday life in Batumi without worrying about your lashes. The goal is not to avoid pools completely. It is to understand what affects retention, what is a myth, and which small habits help your extensions stay neat between fills.

Does chlorine damage lash extensions?

Chlorine does not instantly make lash extensions fall out. A normal swim after the initial curing period is usually fine. However, pool water can affect retention over time because it may dry the natural lashes and leave residue around the lash line. Combined with heat, sunscreen, face products and rubbing your eyes, this can make extensions shed earlier than usual.

The adhesive bond is strongest when it is left alone. Repeated soaking, steam, oils and friction all add stress to that bond. Chlorine is only one part of the picture. In Batumi, warm humid days can also increase natural oil production, especially around the forehead and eyelids. That is why clean lashes and gentle handling matter even more during beach and pool season.

It is also important to remember that lash extensions shed with your natural lash cycle. Seeing a few extensions come out after swimming does not automatically mean the pool caused it. Look at the pattern: a little daily shedding is normal; noticeable gaps shortly after every swim may mean your routine needs adjusting.

The first 24 hours after your appointment

The timing of your swim matters. I recommend avoiding pool water, sea water, sauna steam and very hot showers for the first 24 hours after a new set or a refill. This gives the adhesive its best chance to settle fully without extra moisture, heat or chemical exposure.

If you arrive in Batumi for a short holiday, plan your appointment around your swimming schedule. Ideally, book your lashes at least one day before a pool or beach day. If your itinerary is tight, send me your dates before booking and I will help you choose the most practical appointment time.

Pool-day dos for better retention

A few easy habits can make a real difference. You do not need a complicated travel kit or expensive products. You need consistency.

  • Do wait 24 hours after your appointment before swimming.

  • Do rinse your face and lash line with clean fresh water after the pool. This helps remove chlorine, salt, sweat and sunscreen residue.

  • Do cleanse your lashes when you get home. Use a lash-safe, oil-free foaming cleanser and a soft cleansing brush. Clean gently along the lash line without pressing or scrubbing.

  • Do pat the eye area dry. Use a clean lint-free towel or tissue and press lightly instead of rubbing.

  • Do brush your extensions only once they are dry. A clean spoolie will bring separated lashes back into place.

  • Do wear sunglasses by the pool or beach. They help protect your eyes from wind and reduce the temptation to touch your lashes.

Fresh-water rinsing is especially useful after a long afternoon at a Batumi hotel pool. If you cannot do a full cleanse immediately, rinse first and cleanse properly later that evening.

What not to do after swimming

The most common retention mistakes happen after the swim, not during it. Avoid these habits if you want your set to look balanced until your next refill.

  • Do not rub your eyes with a towel after getting out of the pool.

  • Do not sleep with wet lashes pressed into a pillow.

  • Do not pick apart lashes that look stuck together while they are wet.

  • Do not use waterproof mascara on extensions. Removing it usually requires rubbing or oil-based products.

  • Do not apply oily sunscreen, face cream or makeup remover directly along the lash line.

  • Do not use a lash curler on extensions.

Waterproof sunscreen is excellent for the face and body, but check how you apply it near the eyes. Let facial sunscreen set, then keep the product away from the base of your extensions. If you get sunscreen on your lashes, cleanse it gently instead of trying to wipe it off with a dry towel.

Sea water, pools and sauna: what is different?

Batumi gives us all three: the Black Sea, chlorinated pools and spa areas. None of them requires you to give up lash extensions, but each has its own aftercare point.

ExposureWhat to knowBest habit
Chlorinated poolCan leave drying chemical residue and combines with sunscreen.Rinse with fresh water, then cleanse later.
Black Sea waterSalt, sand and wind may leave lashes feeling dry or tangled.Rinse after swimming and brush only when dry.
Sauna or steam roomHigh heat and repeated steam can put extra stress on retention.Keep sessions occasional and avoid them in the first 24 hours.

Long holiday days often include more than one of these: a beach swim, a shower, a pool and an evening spa. The more exposure your lashes get, the more important your gentle cleansing routine becomes. This is not about being perfect; it is about removing buildup before it sits at the lash line overnight.

My practical swim-day lash routine

Here is the simple routine I suggest to clients who swim often during Batumi’s warm season:

  1. Before swimming, make sure your lashes are clean, dry and brushed.

  2. Use sunscreen carefully, keeping it away from the lash roots.

  3. After the pool or sea, rinse your eye area with fresh water.

  4. At home, cleanse the lashes with oil-free lash shampoo and a soft brush.

  5. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry and allow the extensions to dry fully.

  6. Brush lightly with a clean spoolie.

If you wear makeup for dinner after a pool day, start with clean lashes. Avoid applying heavy eyeliner directly into the lash line. Powder eyeshadow is usually easier to remove than creamy or waterproof eye products, but gentle removal is still essential.

How often should swimmers book a lash refill?

Most clients book a refill every two to three weeks, depending on their natural lash cycle, the style they wear and how well they care for their set. If you swim several times a week, spend long days in the sun, or use sauna facilities regularly, you may notice that a two-week refill feels more comfortable.

I do not promise an exact retention period because every client is different. Natural lashes grow and shed at different speeds, and lifestyle has a real effect. The best approach is to book when you still have enough extensions for a proper refill, rather than waiting until there are large gaps.

A soft classic set may need a different maintenance rhythm than a fuller volume set. If you are unsure what style works best with your travel plans or active routine, explore my lash extension style guide before your appointment.

Tourist tips: plan lashes around your Batumi stay

For visitors, I suggest booking earlier in your stay rather than on the final day. This gives you time to enjoy your lashes, learn the care routine and schedule a quick refill if your trip is long enough. If you are staying in Batumi for several weeks as a digital nomad or seasonal resident, keeping a regular refill date is the easiest way to maintain a clean, full look.

When choosing an appointment, think about airport days, beach plans and spa bookings. A lash appointment right before a full pool day is not ideal. A calm evening appointment before a quieter next day is usually much more comfortable.

Conclusion

Chlorine and lash extensions can coexist beautifully when you follow a realistic routine: wait 24 hours after your appointment, rinse after swimming, cleanse gently at the end of the day, and never rub wet lashes. Batumi summers are for enjoying the sea and pool - not stressing over every splash.

FAQs

- Can I swim in a pool with lash extensions?

Yes. Wait at least 24 hours after your appointment, then rinse your lashes with fresh water after swimming and cleanse them gently later.

- Will chlorine make all my lash extensions fall out?

No. Chlorine does not usually cause instant shedding. Frequent exposure, residue, heat, oils and rubbing can collectively reduce retention, so aftercare matters.

- Should I wash my lash extensions after every pool visit?

If possible, rinse them with fresh water after swimming and do a proper gentle cleanse at the end of the day. This is especially helpful after sunscreen, salt water or a long pool day.

- Can I wear goggles with lash extensions?

You can, but tight goggles may press on the extensions and change their direction. Choose a comfortable fit and avoid pushing the goggles against your lashes.

- Is sea water better than chlorinated pool water for extensions?

Neither is automatically better. Pool water can leave chlorine residue, while sea water brings salt, sand and wind. Rinsing and gentle cleansing after either one is the best practice.
