FAQ & Myths Debunked

Do Lash Extensions Hurt? Batumi Lash Artist Answers

October 18, 2026 · 12 min

“Do lash extensions hurt?” is one of the most common questions I hear from first-time clients in Batumi. The short answer is: no, a correctly performed lash extension appointment should not hurt. You should be able to lie down comfortably with your eyes closed, relax, listen to music, and even fall asleep. Lash extensions are attached to your natural lashes, not to your eyelid skin and not inside your eye.

That said, discomfort is possible when preparation, isolation, application technique, or aftercare is not right. I believe it is better to explain this honestly than to promise that every person will feel exactly the same. Here is what is normal, what is not, and how I make a first lash appointment as calm and comfortable as possible.

Do lash extensions hurt during the appointment?

For most clients, the application itself is painless. Individual extensions or small handmade fans are placed one by one onto isolated natural lashes using a very small amount of professional adhesive. You may notice gentle contact around the eye area, the under-eye pads, or a little pressure while I position your lashes, but you should not feel pulling, pinching, burning, or sharp pain.

Your eyes remain closed throughout the treatment. A full set can take time because careful work is more important than rushing. Many clients use that time as a quiet break from Batumi traffic, travel plans, work calls, and the summer heat outside.

If you have never had extensions before, it can feel unusual simply because someone is working close to your eyes. This is normal nervousness, especially for clients who are sensitive around the eye area. I always encourage you to tell me before we begin if you feel anxious, have sensitive eyes, wear contact lenses, or have had an uncomfortable experience elsewhere.

What sensations are normal and what is not?

A comfortable appointment does not mean you must feel absolutely nothing. The under-eye pads may feel cool at first. Keeping your eyes closed for a long time can make you aware of your eyelids. Some clients notice a mild adhesive scent for a moment, although I work with proper ventilation and use products carefully.

These sensations are not the same as pain. The important difference is whether the feeling passes quickly and stays mild, or whether it becomes strong and unpleasant.

Normal sensations

  • Coolness from under-eye pads at the beginning.
  • A light feeling of tape or pads securing lower lashes.
  • Gentle brushing while lashes are cleaned or separated.
  • Wanting to blink after opening your eyes at the end.
  • Temporary awareness of having longer or fuller lashes.

Signs you should tell your lash artist immediately

  • Burning, stinging, sharp pain, or strong itching during the service.
  • A feeling that an eye is being pulled open by tape or pads.
  • Watery eyes that do not settle after a small adjustment.
  • Persistent discomfort after you open your eyes.
  • Lashes that feel pokey, heavy, or painful when you blink.

Please do not try to “be polite” and endure discomfort. A professional should be happy to pause, check pad placement, adjust tape, review styling, or stop when necessary. Pain is not a required part of getting beautiful lashes.

Why can lash extensions feel uncomfortable?

When people say their extensions hurt, the cause is usually not the idea of lash extensions themselves. It is often a technical or situational issue that needs attention.

One possible reason is poor lower-lash isolation. If lower lashes are caught in a pad or tape, blinking can feel uncomfortable. Another is incorrect attachment: extensions should not be stuck to the skin, glued together in clumps, or attached in a way that pulls on neighboring natural lashes.

Length and volume also matter. A dramatic look can still be comfortable when it is designed within the limits of your natural lashes. But a style that is too long, too heavy, or too dense for your natural lash strength may feel noticeable and may be difficult to wear well. This is why I do not believe in choosing a set only from a photo without looking at your own lashes first.

Eye position can also affect comfort. If your eyes open slightly during application, adhesive fumes may irritate the eye area. I will remind you to keep your eyes gently closed, not squeezed shut. If you need to speak or move, just tell me first.

Do lash extensions damage or hurt natural lashes?

Properly selected and properly applied extensions should not hurt your natural lashes. Your natural lashes grow and shed in a normal cycle, whether you wear extensions or not. It is normal to see an extension shed together with one natural lash. That does not automatically mean the extension caused damage.

Problems can happen when lashes are overloaded, several natural lashes are glued together, or clients pull, pick, or remove extensions themselves. Home removal with oil, tweezers, or force can break natural lashes and irritate delicate skin. If you want a change or removal, it is much safer to have extensions removed professionally.

I choose the styling according to your natural lash condition, eye shape, everyday routine, and desired result. A classic 1:1 set can be a lovely first choice for a natural look. A 2D or 3D set can add softness and density without automatically meaning “heavy.” You can compare different options in my guide to lash extension types and styles.

Batumi humidity, sea water, and comfort after extensions

Batumi has its own lash-life realities: humid air, warm summer days, Black Sea swimming, beach weekends, and sudden rain. Humidity does not make quality lash extensions painful, but it can affect how carefully your appointment environment and aftercare need to be managed.

After your appointment, follow the aftercare guidance I give you and avoid unnecessary steam, rubbing, and oily products around the lash line. If you are visiting Batumi for a few days, plan your appointment around beach and spa activities rather than booking immediately before a long sauna session or a full day in the sea.

Swimming itself is not forbidden forever, but sea salt, sunscreen, sand, and frequent rubbing can make lashes look untidy sooner. Rinse gently after swimming if needed, cleanse your lash line with an appropriate product, and brush only when lashes are dry. For practical details, see my eyelash extension aftercare guide.

What about sensitive eyes, allergies, pregnancy, and MRI?

Sensitivity and allergy are not the same thing. Some people simply have watery or easily irritated eyes, especially after travel, little sleep, seasonal pollen, or a day at the beach. Others may react to a product used around the eye area. I cannot diagnose allergies or make medical decisions, but I can listen to your history and help you make a careful booking choice.

If you have previously had swelling, severe itching, or a strong reaction after lash products, do not ignore it. Tell me before booking and consider speaking with a qualified healthcare professional if you are unsure. A patch test may be discussed in some situations, but it cannot guarantee that a future reaction will not occur.

Pregnancy does not automatically mean lash extensions are impossible, but comfort is individual. Lying still for a long appointment may not feel pleasant, particularly later in pregnancy. We can discuss a more comfortable plan before you book.

For MRI appointments, always tell the medical facility that you wear lash extensions and follow their instructions. Policies can vary by clinic and by the products involved. Your scan provider has the final word on their safety requirements.

How I help first-time clients feel comfortable

I want you to feel informed, not pressured. Before starting, I look at your natural lashes, discuss the result you want, and explain what I recommend. If you are a tourist with limited time in Batumi, we can also consider your departure date, sea plans, and whether you will have time for a refill.

  1. Arrive without eye makeup when possible.
  2. Remove contact lenses before the service for better comfort.
  3. Tell me about sensitivity, previous extensions, or concerns honestly.
  4. Choose a wearable style rather than copying a look that does not suit your lashes.
  5. Speak up immediately if pads, tape, or your eye position feels uncomfortable.

Conclusion

Lash extensions should not hurt when the work is careful, the styling is appropriate, and you communicate openly with your artist. Mild awareness of pads or a new lash look can be normal; burning, pulling, sharp pain, or ongoing discomfort is not something to ignore.

FAQs

- Do lash extensions hurt when you sleep?

They should not hurt while sleeping. In the first day or two, you may be more aware of them if you normally sleep face-down. Try to avoid pressing your lashes into a pillow and do not rub your eyes.

- Can I wear mascara with lash extensions?

It is usually unnecessary, and waterproof mascara is especially difficult to remove without rubbing. If you want a fuller effect, it is generally better to choose a suitable volume set than add mascara to extensions.

- Why do my eyes sting after a lash appointment?

Brief irritation can happen if eyes opened during application or if the eye area is sensitive. Strong, worsening, or persistent symptoms should not be ignored; contact your lash artist and seek appropriate professional advice when needed.

- Can I go swimming in the Black Sea with lash extensions?

Yes, after following your initial aftercare instructions. Sea water, sunscreen, and rubbing can affect cleanliness and retention, so rinse gently if needed, cleanse carefully, and avoid rubbing your eyes.
