FAQ & Myths Debunked

Lash Myths in Batumi: An Artist’s Honest Breakdown

October 13, 2026 · 12 min

As a lash artist in Batumi, I hear the same concerns from first-time clients almost every week: “Will extensions ruin my natural lashes?”, “Can I swim in the Black Sea?”, “Will it hurt?”, or “Do I need to cancel because I am pregnant?” Most lash myths start with one bad experience, unclear aftercare, or a service performed without proper isolation and weight selection. Let’s separate realistic precautions from scary stories, so you can decide whether lash extensions are right for you.

Myth: Lash extensions always damage natural lashes

This is probably the biggest fear, and it is understandable. No one wants beautiful lashes for two weeks at the cost of weakened natural lashes afterwards.

Properly applied extensions should not damage healthy natural lashes. Each extension or handmade fan needs to be isolated and matched to the strength of one natural lash. I never choose length, curl, or volume simply because it looks dramatic in a reference photo. Your natural lash line sets the safe limit.

Damage usually comes from poor technique or poor habits, such as:

  • extensions that are too long or heavy for the natural lash;
  • several natural lashes glued together;
  • fans that are too wide or dense for the client’s lash line;
  • pulling, picking, or trying to remove extensions at home;
  • wearing old extensions for too long without a refill or professional removal.

Natural lashes also shed continuously as part of their normal growth cycle. It is easy to blame extensions when you notice a shed lash, but the lash was already due to fall out. My job is to make sure the extension leaves with it, without stressing the surrounding lashes. If you are choosing between styles, read my guide to lash extension types and effects before your appointment.

Myth: Getting lash extensions is painful

A lash extension appointment should be comfortable. Your eyes stay closed while I work, and the process itself does not involve needles, heat, or contact lenses. Many clients use the appointment as quiet rest time and even fall asleep.

That said, “comfortable” does not mean I ignore your feedback. Some people are sensitive to bright light, under-eye pads, fumes, or having their eyes closed for a long appointment. If you feel stinging, watering, burning, or sharp discomfort, tell me immediately. I can check the pads, airflow, eye closure, and positioning.

A little temporary sensitivity after an appointment can happen, especially if someone opened their eyes during the procedure or has naturally dry eyes. Persistent pain, pronounced redness, swelling, or unusual discharge is not something to wait out or self-treat. Remove the suspected irritant only with professional guidance and contact a qualified healthcare professional when needed.

Myth: You cannot swim in the sea with lash extensions

You can enjoy the Black Sea with lash extensions, but timing and aftercare matter. Batumi summer is humid, warm, and full of spontaneous beach plans, so I always ask visitors whether they are flying in for a weekend, going straight to the beach, or planning a sauna day.

Fresh adhesive needs time to settle. I recommend avoiding water, steam, heavy sweating, and swimming for the first 24 hours after your appointment. After that, sea swimming is possible. Saltwater, sunscreen, sand, and frequent rinsing may affect how clean and tidy extensions look, so the key is gentle care rather than avoiding the sea completely.

My practical Black Sea routine

  1. Book your new full set at least one day before a beach day or boat trip.
  2. After swimming, rinse the eye area gently with clean fresh water.
  3. Cleanse your lashes with an appropriate lash cleanser once you are back at your hotel or apartment.
  4. Pat dry carefully, then brush only when the lashes are fully dry.
  5. Avoid rubbing your eyes with a towel, especially after applying sunscreen.

For more details, see my eyelash extension aftercare guide. If you are a tourist with a tightly planned schedule, tell me before booking and I will help you choose a realistic appointment time.

Myth: Sauna and humidity instantly make extensions fall off

Batumi’s coastal humidity does not automatically ruin lashes. Adhesive performance is influenced by humidity during the application, which is why a professional monitors the room conditions and works with suitable products and technique.

After your appointment, regular humid air is not a problem. Repeated exposure to intense steam and heat, however, can be harder on the bond over time. This includes very hot saunas, steam rooms, and long hot showers directly into the face. It does not mean you can never visit a spa; it means you should be sensible, avoid steam for the first 24 hours, and expect that an active spa routine may mean you need refills a little sooner.

Do not try to “save” lashes by skipping cleansing. In Batumi’s heat, sweat, sunscreen, and natural skin oils build up faster. Clean lashes are more comfortable and often look better between appointments.

Myth: Mascara is required to make extensions visible

A well-chosen set should give you the effect you want without mascara. Classic 1:1 extensions can look like a polished version of natural lashes, while 2D, 3D, and more textured styling can create stronger definition. The right choice depends on your natural lash density, eye shape, and everyday routine.

I generally advise avoiding regular mascara on extensions, especially waterproof formulas. It can be difficult to remove without rubbing, and residue can make fans stick together. Oil-based removers are also not ideal around lash adhesive.

If you want a more expressive look for dinner, photos, or an event, tell me during the consultation instead of adding layers of product later. A slightly darker, fuller, or more open-eye mapping may be a better solution. You can also explore options in my Batumi lash extension booking guide.

Myth: Pregnancy automatically means no lash extensions

Pregnancy is not an automatic yes or no for a cosmetic lash appointment. Every person, pregnancy, and level of comfort is different. Some clients prefer to pause appointments; others feel comfortable continuing with their usual style after discussing it with their healthcare provider.

My role is not to give medical clearance. I can make the appointment more comfortable by offering breaks, adjusting the bed position when possible, keeping the room ventilated, and choosing a manageable appointment length. If you have a history of reactions, eye conditions, complications, or any concern about lying down for the service, please ask your doctor or midwife first.

I also recommend avoiding a major style change right before a trip, wedding, or maternity photoshoot if you have never worn extensions before. A calm trial appointment gives us time to see how you feel and what style you enjoy.

Myth: An allergy can be fixed by switching to “sensitive” glue

This myth can be risky. Lash adhesive reactions and eye-area irritation have different possible causes: adhesive ingredients, gel pads, tape, cleanser, fumes, rubbing, or an existing skin or eye issue. A product labelled “sensitive” is not a promise that no reaction will happen.

If you have had swelling, itching, redness, or a previous reaction, tell me before booking. I will ask what happened, when it started, and what products were used if you know. A patch test may be discussed, but it cannot guarantee that a full application will be reaction-free. If symptoms are severe or ongoing, a healthcare professional should assess them rather than relying on another adhesive experiment.

Honest communication is more valuable than pushing through an appointment. Your comfort comes first, even if the correct decision is to postpone or choose another beauty service.

Myth: You must remove extensions before an MRI

This depends on the facility and the materials used, so there is no universal internet answer. Most modern lash extensions are made from synthetic fibres, but MRI safety rules are set by the imaging centre and can vary by procedure and equipment.

Before your scan, tell the MRI staff that you wear lash extensions and follow their instructions. Do not assume that social media advice applies to your appointment. If the clinic asks for removal, arrange a professional removal in advance rather than pulling extensions off yourself.

How I help first-time clients avoid common lash mistakes

A good lash appointment starts before the adhesive is opened. I ask about your desired look, your travel plans, whether you swim or use sauna regularly, previous reactions, and how much maintenance you realistically want. For example, a visitor staying near Batumi Boulevard for four days may want a fresh, low-maintenance classic or soft 2D set, while a long-term resident may prefer a refill schedule that fits her routine.

ConcernMy honest approach
Very natural resultI choose a light, balanced mapping instead of adding unnecessary volume.
Beach holidayI schedule the set at least 24 hours before sea swimming when possible.
Previous irritationI discuss the history first and never promise a reaction-free result.
Limited time in BatumiI recommend booking ahead through WhatsApp and allowing enough time for consultation.
Unsure about styleI explain the difference between classic, 2D, and fuller volume honestly.

Conclusion

Lash extensions are not magic and they are not automatically harmful. They are a beauty service that depends on suitable styling, careful application, clean aftercare, and honest expectations. Sea swimming, Batumi humidity, pregnancy, mascara, sauna visits, and scans all deserve practical decisions rather than dramatic myths.

FAQs

- Can I get lash extensions before a beach holiday in Batumi?

Yes. Ideally, book at least 24 hours before swimming, sauna, or heavy sweating. After swimming, rinse gently with fresh water, cleanse your lashes, and avoid rubbing them with a towel.

- Do lash extensions make natural lashes fall out?

Natural lashes shed as part of their normal cycle. Correctly isolated, appropriately weighted extensions should shed with the individual natural lash rather than pull out healthy neighbouring lashes.

- Can I wear mascara with eyelash extensions?

It is usually best not to use regular or waterproof mascara on extensions. It can leave residue, cause clumping, and encourage rubbing during removal. Choose the desired fullness during your appointment instead.

- Are lash extensions safe during pregnancy?

Pregnancy does not create one universal rule. Discuss any personal health concerns with your healthcare provider first, and tell me so I can make the appointment as comfortable as possible.

- What should I do if my eyes become swollen or painful after extensions?

Do not rub your eyes or apply random products. Contact a qualified healthcare professional for persistent or severe symptoms, and let your lash artist know what happened before arranging another appointment.
