FAQ & Myths Debunked

Poor Lash Retention in Batumi: What to Do

October 10, 2026 · 12 min

If your lash extensions start shedding sooner than expected, it is frustrating - especially when you planned beach photos, dinners, or a short holiday in Batumi. Poor retention does not automatically mean your natural lashes are weak or that extensions are “bad.” In my experience, retention usually comes down to a few practical factors: the natural lash growth cycle, preparation, home care, skin type, and Batumi’s humid coastal climate. Let’s separate the common myths from what actually helps.

First: what does normal lash extension shedding look like?

Every natural lash has its own growth cycle. A natural lash can shed while the extension is still perfectly attached to it. This is normal and happens every day, whether you wear extensions or not. Because individual lashes grow at different speeds, you may notice a few extensions falling out daily.

Most clients need a refill around every 2–3 weeks, depending on their natural lash cycle, styling, daily routine, and how full they prefer the set to look. A very light classic set can appear less full sooner than a 3D set simply because it starts with fewer visible fans.

The important question is not “Did any lashes fall out?” It is: “Did most of the set shed unusually quickly, or are there many extensions coming off without a natural lash attached?” If a large number fall away within the first few days, I want to know about it so we can look for the likely reason together.

Myth: poor retention always means the lash artist used bad glue

Adhesive matters, but it is not the only factor. Lash adhesive works best when the humidity, temperature, natural lash surface, and application technique are all suitable. Batumi can be especially changeable: hot humid summer days, air-conditioned apartments, sea air, and rainy weather can all affect the environment around an appointment.

As a lash artist, I control the details I can control: cleansing and preparing the lashes, isolating carefully, choosing an appropriate adhesive and styling, and checking attachment. But retention also depends on what happens before and after you arrive.

Common reasons retention may be shorter

  • Oily skin or a very active skincare routine around the eyes.
  • Recent use of heavy eye cream, SPF, facial oil, or makeup that leaves residue on lashes.
  • Hormonal changes, stress, illness, or seasonal shedding.
  • Frequent rubbing, sleeping face-down, or pulling at loose extensions.
  • Steam, sweat, swimming, or tears before the adhesive has fully settled.
  • A long tourist day after the appointment: heat, beach wind, sunscreen, cocktails, and little sleep can all add up.

It is not about blaming the client. Good retention is a shared result: professional application plus realistic, consistent aftercare.

The first 24 hours matter more than many people think

The old myth says you must avoid water for 48 hours. Modern professional adhesives can cure much faster than that, but I still recommend treating the first 24 hours gently. Avoid direct steam, sauna sessions, very hot showers directly on your face, and a long swim immediately after the appointment.

In Batumi, this is worth planning around. If you have a sea day, hammam booking, gym class, or long drive to the mountains, it may be smarter to schedule your lashes afterward. When you book with me, tell me about your plans and I can help you choose a practical appointment time.

After the initial settling period, clean lashes are healthier for retention than lashes that are never washed. Sweat, sebum, makeup, and city dust collect at the lash line. Gentle daily cleansing with a suitable oil-free lash cleanser helps keep the attachment area clean.

Can swimming in the Black Sea cause poor retention?

Swimming itself does not instantly ruin lash extensions. Once the initial post-appointment period has passed, you can enjoy the Black Sea, hotel pools, and showers. The issue is the combination of salt water, wind, sunscreen, heat, and rubbing your eyes with a towel.

Salt water can leave residue, while sunscreen and beach oils can travel toward the eye area. If you repeatedly rub your lashes to dry them or remove sand, you can loosen extensions mechanically. Pool chlorine may also leave the lashes feeling dry or coated.

A beach-day retention routine

  1. Keep sunscreen and face oil away from the lash line as much as possible.
  2. Wear sunglasses to reduce wind, squinting, and accidental touching.
  3. After swimming, rinse your face gently with fresh water.
  4. Cleanse your lash line when you are back at your accommodation.
  5. Pat the area dry - do not rub - and brush lashes only when they are dry.

If you are visiting for only a few days, I recommend booking your appointment before an evening out or toward the end of your trip instead of immediately before a full beach holiday. You can also read my local advice on getting lash extensions in Batumi.

Myth: mascara is the best fix for gaps

When lashes start looking less full, mascara can seem like the fastest solution. But regular mascara, especially waterproof formulas, often makes extensions clump, adds weight, and requires rubbing or oil-based removers to take off. That can make a retention issue worse.

If you wear extensions, the better solution is usually a refill at the right time. I remove grown-out extensions safely and replace them based on the lashes that are currently ready to support an extension. Trying to cover gaps with heavy mascara can turn a neat set into a tangled one.

Choosing the right style at the start also helps. Classic 1:1 extensions create a soft mascara-like look, while 2D or 3D volume can look fuller between refills because each natural lash carries a lightweight fan. You can compare the available types of lash extensions before choosing a set.

What to do if your lashes shed quickly

Do not panic, pull at the remaining extensions, or try to glue anything back at home. Take a clear photo in daylight and look at the timing. Did the shedding begin on day one, after a sauna, after a beach day, or close to two weeks after your appointment? That timeline gives useful clues.

Myth: extensions damage natural lashes and cause them to fall out

Properly selected and professionally applied lash extensions should not damage healthy natural lashes. The key is correct isolation, suitable weight, correct length, and not attaching multiple natural lashes together. I do not choose dramatic length or density if your natural lashes cannot comfortably support it.

Damage is more likely when lashes are pulled off, when extensions are too heavy, or when they are applied in clumps. A natural lash that has completed its cycle will shed with its extension attached; this can look alarming, but it does not mean the extension caused the lash to fall out.

If you want a more natural, lower-maintenance look for humid weather or a short stay in Batumi, tell me. A balanced classic or light volume set is often a better choice than an extremely dense look that needs more frequent upkeep.

Conclusion

Poor lash retention is rarely one simple problem. Look at the full picture: your natural lash cycle, skin and skincare, the first 24 hours, beach and sauna plans, and how gently you clean and handle your lashes. I would rather give you honest advice and choose a style that fits your routine than promise an exact number of weeks that no artist can guarantee.

FAQs

- How long should lash extensions last before a refill?

Most clients book a refill every 2–3 weeks. Your personal timing depends on natural lash shedding, the style you chose, skin type, and daily care. A fuller volume set may visually last longer than a light classic set, but every set still needs maintenance.

- Can I go to a sauna with lash extensions?

Yes, but avoid sauna and strong steam during the first 24 hours after your appointment. After that, occasional sauna use is usually possible, although frequent heat and steam may shorten retention for some clients. Cleanse the lashes afterward and avoid rubbing them.

- Can I have an MRI with lash extensions?

Always tell the MRI provider that you have lash extensions. Some products may contain pigments or components that the facility needs to assess. Follow the imaging centre’s instructions, because their safety protocol comes first.

- Are lash extensions safe during pregnancy?

Pregnancy does not automatically prevent lash extensions, but comfort, sensitivities, and retention can change. If you choose to book, tell me in advance so we can plan a comfortable position and keep the appointment practical. For personal medical concerns, ask your healthcare professional.

- Can an allergy cause poor retention?

Eye irritation, seasonal allergies, watery eyes, and rubbing can all affect retention. If you experience swelling, burning, or a strong reaction, do not attempt to remove lashes yourself. Stop using eye products and seek professional medical advice when needed.
